The Play Prescription!

A sense of wellbeing

For people with complex multiple needs and their families, play contributes to a sense of wellbeing and normality. Life can often be stressful for children and adults who receive a large number of medical interventions, therapies and appointments. Play enables them to relax and be themselves without pressure or control from their play partner. To enjoy being in the moment together.

A sense of wellbeing encompasses emotional, physical and social health contributing to overall life satisfaction and happiness. Surely that is what we all strive for, and it is exactly what having a play prescription endeavours to achieve.

It’s about bringing joy and happiness, smiles, laughter and joy. Feeling a key part of a family at home or a team within school or respite care brings self-confidence, self-esteem and that all important sense of belonging that everybody deserves to have.

In a world where so much of peoples lives who have complex needs and disabilities and medical intervention fills almost every element and aspect of their lives and day to day being - we MUST provide the balance within the social model to ensure wellbeing and positive mental health.

The Play Prescription bases all aims and objectives around a positive CAN-DO attitude which in turn promotes and achieves all those feel-good vibes.

Every single person I see has a unique and individual programme of play devised and tailored to their likes, abilities, and preferences. Incorporating choice, empowerment and success is a vital element to be weaved into their lives. When we feel good about something and experience that element of achievement – we want to do that even more which breeds fulfilment through fun and innovative ways unique to us all.

For those working alongside me during sessions this becomes a unique opportunity for them to gain a greater insight into the child/adult’s world. They in turn will have the opportunity to try the ideas themselves under Sue’s supportive method of sharing many new ways to play and create joy.

This ensures that by the end of a set period of sessions (minimum of 6) the family and team around the child/adult are confident to continue the play ideas ensuring

that the positive feelings and wellbeing continue long after the paid sessions are completed.

Families tell me all the time that they see a real change in their child’s/young adults demeanour following regular play sessions where they have a chance to focus on simply being themselves and achieving their potential through play. They are happy, smiling, relaxed, more confident to try new things. They start to develop pride in being themselves.

Everybody has a right to feel heard and valued. Two-way communication is the key to mutual respect and that is a core value of the play prescription.

My strap line sums it up – as we go on a journey with a child/adult/ family and care provider, we quite literally discover the person within – and then we celebrate them.

Discovering YOU together.
